"A poem should be palpable and mute
as a globed fruit. A poem should be motionless in time as the
moon climbs."
- Archibald Macleish
Our mission with Random Acts of Reading
is simple.
We want to spread the love for books and
increase literacy in Oakland one school at a time.
We strongly believe that reading aloud
to children is one of the most effective ways to accomplish this
goal. We also believe that literacy enriches people's lives.
I have worked as a teacher in Oakland for 7 years. I worked as
library assistant for 4 years. My current position as a firefighter
allows me to work with Random Acts of Kindness and fulfills one
of my goals of teaching a million kids to read.
My plan is to share books with children
at various schools within the City of Oakland. We will read aloud
with kids twice per month. We will create book clubs, as well
as a bibliography of recommended books for children of diverse
ethnic origins.
Please contact me at Station 16A to schedule
a wonderful moment in time. Read for one hour to a group of elementary
school children and make a positive difference in their lives!
Sincerely Yours,
Smith, James R. 16A
